Detailed description of challenge

Background:

  • As part of the sustainability strategy, SONAX wants to determine its Corporate Carbon Footprint. The determination of the Corporate Carbon Footprint is an aspect of the sustainability strategy of SONAX. The first step is to determine the company´s Scope 1 and 2 emissions as part of the ChemTelligence Challenge.

Target:

  • Creation of a model for the calculation of the corporate carbon footprint of the SONAX GmbH.
  • Calculation of the Corporate Carbon Footprint for the SONAX GmbH using the previously created model.
  • A common database that is suitable from an IT perspective should be used as the basis and integrated for calculating the Scope emissions. (Sphera is preferred)
  • The focus is initially on Scope 1 & 2 emissions
  • Furthermore, an initial concept for the calculation of Scope 3 emissions shall be developed. Ideally, the Challenge-taker can contribute concept ideas for this.

Information about the company:

  • The SONAX GmbH is a fourth-generation family business with locations in Bavaria.
  • SONAX is the Market leader for cleaning and care products in the automotive sector in German-speaking countries with a global sales network.
  • Sustainability is an integral part of the corporate strategy and SONAX is working closely with its partners along the value chain to reduce the ecological footprint.

First initiatives within company

  • SONAX has started collecting KPIs such as gas, power and diesel consumption, and is able to provide these data for the project.
  • The focus here was on the data relevant for Scope 1 and 2.

Need for support

  • As part of the challenge, the corporate carbon footprint for the SONAX GmbH should be calculated for Scope 1 and 2.
  • A suitable model (e.g. based on excel) is to be created for this purpose, which is to be linked to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) database systems.
  • Ideally, the challenge-taker brings knowledge of the required IT interfaces to Sphera into the project.
  • Furthermore, a concept for calculating the Scope 3 emissions (all indirect emissions generated along the company´s value chain) is to be developed
